Rare mineral mounds appear for the first time in Utah’s Great Salt Lake

Geologists and authorities at Utah’s Great Salt Lake Park have discovered mounds of a rare crystalline mineral which emerged above the surface of the lake. They found four white mounds which were first noticed in October 2019 by the ranger Allison Thompson. The ranger noticed the growth of the mirabilite formations and then asked the experts at Utah Geological Survey to provide their assistance. As per the researchers, these four white mounds are up to three feet high and dozens of feet across. State geologists who tested the mounds later revealed that these were made with Glauber’s salt, also known as “mirabilite,” which appears as white or colourless monoclinic crystals and after being exposed to dry air, it effloresces and forms a powdery anhydrous sodium sulfate. Scientists claimed that these mounds disappear with changing temperatures and the rising lake levels. In a blog post by Utah State Parks officials, it was mentioned that researchers involved in this study interested in the precipitation of the white mounds because they may serve as analogues to similar features and conditions on Martian surface. As per the researchers, such mounds are very ra...

During my recent trip to Europe, I found out that converters were not as commonly sold

During my recent trip to Europe, I found out that converters were not as commonly sold as adapters, and for a good reason. The majority of the world receives 220-240 V single phase voltage at 50-60 Hz with the surprisingly small number of exceptions being Canada, Colombia, Japan, Taiwan, the United States, Venezuela, and several other nations in the Caribbean and Central America. While the majority of countries have one defined plug type, several countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia use a collection of incompatible plugs for different wall outlets, which requires a number of adapters depending on the region traveled. Although there is a fair degree of standardization among most countries with regards to the voltage used for domestic appliances, what has caused the rift between the 220-240 V standard and the 100-127 V standards used in the remaining nations? Mains power (or grid power, wall power, domestic power) refers to the general purpose AC electric power supply that is accessible in homes and businesses, typically for domestic appliances. Mains power can differ by voltage and frequency, and of course trying to use an incompatible value runs the risk of destroying yo...

Minneapolis follows Hennepin County in stopping battery collections

The City of Minneapolis has followed Hennepin County in stopping battery recycling amid fears over potential fire hazards. The city announced Tuesday that it will no longer accept batteries in its recycling collection, instead saying that alkaline batteries (your AA, AAA batteries) must go in the black garbage carts. Meanwhile, rechargeable and lithium batteries, and items such as e-cigarettes and cellphones that contain batteries must not be disposed of in garbage and recycling carts. If you have these batteries, they must be taken to Hennepin County’s drop-off locations in Bloomington and Brooklyn Park, and will also accept batteries during hazardous waste drop-off events held in the city during spring, summer and fall. Previously, Minneapolis residents could leave alkaline batteries in plastic bags atop their recycling bin for collection. It comes amid concerns over fires caused by lithium batteries, with the city saying they are behind increasing numbers of blazes in garbage trucks, drop-off locations and disposal facilities across the country. The city says that you can reduce the risk of fires from lithium and rechargeable batteries by placing them in a clear plasti...

Compressed gas cylinders are generally tall, slim and heavy, which means they must be secured to

Compressed gas cylinders are generally tall, slim and heavy, which means they must be secured to trolleys in order to move them about. Linde Group, the German industrial gases company, wanted to produce a more portable model by changing the size and weight. Users include plumbers, laboratory techniciansand mechanics, and the gases most commonly contained are oxygen, argon and a mix of argon and carbon dioxide. The new cylinder, called the Genie, is shorter, lighter and more ergonomic than conventional cylinders, thanks to integrated wheels and handles that remove the need for a trolley. Made of thin sheet steel to reduce its weight, the Genie is then wrapped in carbon fibre to match the strength of a conventional steel cylinder needed to withstand the pressure of the gas inside. Genie’s steel layer is just 3mm thick compared with 6mm for the steel walls of conventional cylinders. The Genie is then encased in a plastic jacket, with handles moulded on tothe top and space made on the base where wheels are attached. Out of its three sizes, the 20-litre version is expected to be the most widely used. At 22kg, it weighs less than half a conventional cylinder containing the same volum...

Bridge inspection means temporary closure | Ledger Independent

State officials said Friday that repairing the damaged Simon Kenton Memorial Bridge in downtown Maysville will require temporary daytime closures of the Ohio River crossing next week so Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews can conduct further engineering analysis. Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 13, the U.S. 62 bridge will close to all traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The closure will continue each day for several days, possibly through Friday, Aug. 16. When the bridge is closed, traffic should detour using the William H. Harsha Bridge (U.S. 68) three miles west of Maysville to connect between Kentucky and U.S. 52 or U.S. 62 in Ohio. The closures are required so engineers can perform an extensive review of damaged hanger cables – the vertical cables extending from the main suspension cable that support the bridge’s driving surface – and other bridge components. Crews will also take measurements for component replacements that might be needed. The work is the first step in drafting repair plans that will restore the Simon Kenton bridge to a more normal weight limit, according to Allen Blair, spokesperson for KYTC District 9. On July 29, following inspections that revealed damage to the bri...

The last 10 years in music have brought about seismic shifts. Hip-hop has overtaken rock and pop as the heart of youth culture; we’ve seen the rise (and decline) of EDM, the trap takeover and SoundCloud rap renaissance, the reemergence of horny-as-hell R&B, and the second coming of nü metal. Boy bands are back. “Indie rock” as we know it has shapeshifted and split off into smaller factions that are weirder, deeper, and darker, from John Maus to Alex G. Traditional genre lines have all but dissolved, and impossible-to-classify artists like Billie Eilish or Brockhampton or Deafheaven enter the conversation every day. If Lil Nas X is any indication, it now seems possible for an artist to reach atmospheric levels of fame overnight. And thanks to the proliferation of streaming services, we now have access to an infinite music library anytime, anywhere (just don’t think too hard about the inner workings of the algorithm). Music is more democratic than ever before—and there’s certainly a hell of a lot more of it. So how do you distill 10 years of music into the 100 albums that mattered most? It seems like an impossible task, but we tried. If 2010 was t...

Technology developments in wellhead systems bring greater efficiency and safety to drilling applications

As shale drilling and completion operations have advanced, so, too, have wellhead control technologies. The RSH wellhead system is bringing greater well control, safety and cost-efficiency to shale plays in the U.S. and beyond. Much has been written about the shale boom that began more than a decade ago in the U.S. A combination of favorable oil prices, technological innovations and a growing global demand for energy helped the E&P industry turn shale into an economically favorable source of vast volumes of oil and gas production. The traditional drilling techniques since the early 19th century—such as drilling vertical wells into conventional oil-rich reservoirs across the U.S.—often left large volumes of recoverable oil and gas in the formation, due to limited connectivity. Additionally, the depletion of these conventional reservoirs over the decades raised the industry demand for greater technology innovations—a demand that was met with the development of horizontal drilling technology, hydraulic fracturing completions and multi-well pad drilling for unconventional reservoirs. As they explored and tested these advancements in their shale wells, operators began to push the...

10 Stocks to Buy as the 2020 Presidential Election Approaches

Copyright © 2020 InvestorPlace Media, LLC. All rights reserved. 9201 Corporate Blvd, Rockville, MD 20850. Four years ago, the presidential race was one of the most riveting forms of entertainment ever. Suddenly, news outlets like CNN, MSNBC, perhaps even C-SPAN became relevant and interesting. Like my fellow Americans, I stared at the television, unable to comprehend how reality TV star Donald Trump changed every rule in politics. Currently undergoing a repeat performance, it’s time to consider stocks to buy for the 2020 presidential election. Of course, I’m not sure who is going to win the White House come November 2020. What I can promise, though, is media-driven fireworks. As former Forbes contributor Brett Edkins noted, Trump wasn’t the only winner in 2016. “The three major cable news networks earned record profits and attracted record audiences as millions of Americans tuned in to watch the dramatic showdown between Trump and Hillary Clinton.” If you had placed media-related companies on your list of stocks to buy at the time, chances are, your portfolio is doing very well. For the 2020 presidential election, we have several compelling themes to attract audiences: the ongoi...
