Lawmakers Seek Protections For Workers Against Lung Damage Tied To Making Countertops : Shots

CNRI/Science Photo Library/Getty Images hide caption A colored X-ray of the lungs of a patient with silicosis, a type of pneumoconiosis. The yellow grainy masses in the lungs are areas of scarred tissue and inflammation. Lawmakers in Congress are calling on the Department of Labor to do more to protect workers who may be unsafely cutting “engineered stone” used for countertops. The material contains high levels of the mineral silica, and breathing in silica dust is dangerous. While silica is found in natural stones, like granite, engineered stone made of quartz can be more than 90% silica. This type of artificial stone has become increasingly popular among Americans for kitchen and bathroom countertops in recent years. Even though adequate dust control can completely eliminate the risk of silica-related disease, at least 18 workers in California, Colorado, Texas and Washington who cut slabs of this material to order have recently suffered severe lung damage, according to physicians and public health o...

Good People Making Bad Decisions: A ‘Community Solar’ Case Study

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> The Alternative Technology Association (ATA to its friends) is a wonderful organisation. They started as the Alternative Technology Cooperative in 1980 and ever since they have been urging Australians to think differently and more sustainably about how they use and generate energy. In their very first publication, “Soft Technology” (created with the power of a typewriter and textas) you could learn how to make your own hydrogen at home. Don’t try this at home kids. Actually – do try this at home kids. You might learn something other than how to get to level 1,542 on Jetpack Joyride. I don’t know why they did this, but I’m guessing that they decided renewable energy isn’t so ‘alternative’ any more. Personally I think it’s a mistake. I hate the new name. Bland, corporate, unoriginal. So I will be a curmudgeonly old git and keep calling them ‘the ATA’. The ATA’s quarterly, now eponymous, magazine ‘Renew’ is put together by some of Australia’s most knowledgeable energy experts and I’m an avid reader. Despite me gently ...

Buffalo Rising is a nationally recognized website that delivers highly influential content and advertising that is relevant to people living in and around Buffalo, NY. Our readers trust us to serve as one of their primary sources of local information, allowing you to reach targeted customers who are already engaged in relevant content related to your business. I have just seen the future of Buffalo. A few minutes ago I met up with Mark Croce and his crew to see the work that is currently underway at the Curtiss Hotel. To say that I was impressed would be an understatement. The hotel, even in its pupa-like state is a masterpiece of elegance. It all starts with the extended sidewalks that Croce paid for in order to accommodate a year round patio. The patio spot is just off the restaurant that is being created in the image of Buffalo’s historic Chez Ami, complete with the rotating bar. But before you get there, take a look up and see that the new cornice has been brilliantly illuminated with LED lighting. And next the columns will be given a wash of upward lighting. “The Curtiss Hotel will be viewable from a mile away,” said Croce. At this point, a visitor must enter through the ma...

Maturity at harvest is the most critical factor influencing post-harvest life, especially for fruit like apples

Maturity at harvest is the most critical factor influencing post-harvest life, especially for fruit like apples and pears, that are sensitive to a vegetal hormone called ethylene, which accelerates their ripening process. Preventing the negative effect of ethylene in the orchard is key to harvesting the best quality fruit and minimizing post-harvest waste. Delaying harvest is a normal practice used by growers to gain cover color and larger size. Gaining control over how and when fruit ripens, and expanding the harvest window for optimal color, size and firmness without the worry of over maturity can be achieved with the pre-harvest application of Harvista, an AgroFresh solution. Many products emit ethylene, a natural plant hormone, as they start to ripen, which signals the surrounding fruit to ripen until decay. Harvista provides a powerful solution for growers to control ethylene sensitivity and regulate pre-harvest ripening. The active ingredient in Harvista, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), is similar to ethylene structure and prevents ethylene binding to receptor sites. Protected against both internal and external sources of ethylene, fruit matures more slowly. When applied sev...

Laser cutters are CNC power tools, which means an operator uploads a job digitally and then pushes

Laser cutters are CNC power tools, which means an operator uploads a job digitally and then pushes START to let the machine do all the work while they lie back in a hammock sipping a margarita, occasionally leaping out in a panic because the sound coming from the machine changed slightly. Like other power tools, laser cutters are built around doing one thing very well, but they require an operator’s full attention and support. The operator needs to handle all the other things that go on before, during, and after the job. It’s not too hard to get adequate results, but to get truly professional and repeatable ones takes work and experience and an attention to detail. People often focus on success stories, but learning from failures is much more educational. In the spirit of exploring that idea, here are my favorite ways to fail at laser cutting and engraving. Not all of these are my own personal experience, but they are all someone’s personal experience. Null Space Labs gets a laser cutter – no doors or stairs for this thing! Roof shingles represent an important chapter in the evolution of roofing materials. Up until the middle

Roof shingles represent an important chapter in the evolution of roofing materials. Up until the middle of the 19th century, wood and slate shingles or clay tiles were commonly used for roofing in Australia and elsewhere. Roofs were also laid by covering the surface with fabric or heavy paper, which was then coated with tar and sprinkled with sand for long-term protection. The process was further simplified with the introduction of paper pre-coated with tar and sand. The roof shingle, as we know it today, owes its origin to the inventiveness of Henry Reynolds, a roofing contractor from Grand Rapids, Michigan who cut up the tar-coated paper into rectangular pieces in 1903 to create asphalt shingles. Asphalt shingles continue to be a popular roofing choice in the building industry. Having evolved considerably since their introduction in the market at the turn of the 20th century, asphalt shingles today feature a fibreglass mat as the base layer coated with asphalt and ceramic granules. These roof shingles score high on wind and impact resistance, waterproofing, fire performance, style, appeal and affordability. However, there are several different types of roof shingles with mater...

Sundance 2020 Indie Episodic and Shorts Lineup Revealed

A week after its feature film lineup was revealed, today the Sundance Institute announced the Indie Episodic, Shorts and Special Events sections of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. As you might imagine, there’s some unusual material among these selections. Sundance is known for that sort of thing, and that’s part of what makes it great. Historically, filmmakers have had opportunity to break out in Utah when no other doors would open for them. These days, it plays host to some more reputable names and projects, but it’s still among the best places to discover up and coming filmmakers. For 2020, we’ve got a William Friedkin/The Exorcist-related project, one about aliens, one about pizza, and an animated short about geese, just to name a few. In all, 74 short films will screen at the Festival from 27 countries. These were chosen from 10,397 submissions (4,992 from the U.S. and 5,405 international). “Authenticity and independent voices resonate across formats – and that’s evident across the full spectrum of this year’s Indie Episodic and Special Events slates. Defined by distinctive voices and enlightening viewpoints, these are riveting projects that find inspiration in the urgent s...

Val-Matic’s double offset high-performance butterfly valve, with a pressure rating up to 300 psi, is constructed of ductile iron with a 17-4 stainless steel shaft for strength and reliability, which can be used in municipal, industrial and power applications. Double offset design reduces seat strain.
