Now Metal Particles From Tattoo Needles Have Been Found in Human Lymph Nodes

It’s not just ink particles and contaminants that can travel through your body when you get tattooed. Researchers have now found that metal nanoparticles from the tattooing needles can get left behind, too. These particles – shed from the needles used to puncture your skin and deposit the ink – include nickel and chromium, which are allergens. So they could induce allergic responses previously attributed only to the inks. “There is more to tattoos than meets the eye,” said environmental scientist Hiram Castilla of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). “It is not only about the cleanliness of the parlour, the sterilisation of the equipment or even about the pigments. Now we find that the needle wear also has an impact in your body.” Although we humans have been decorating our bodies with pigment deposited under the epidermis for thousands of years, little research has been done on what effect that ink has on our bodies. Most of it does stay put, since the ink particles are too big for our immune systems to break down. But as ESRF scientists discovered last year, a very small amount of the minutest particles do actually get ...

Lasersaur That Cuts 1/2″ Plywood And 10mm Acrylic (Pew-Pew)

Remember when building your own 3D printer was a big deal? We’re starting to think that building your own laser cutter might be the next hot topic. Boasting a 16,000 square-foot facility, the Dallas Makerspace is an impressive collaboration of local artists, engineers, makers, and thinkers. Recently they embarked on building a serious laser cutting machine. They chose to go with the an open-hardware design rather than buying an off-the-shelf unit. What they built is based on the Lasersaur plans. (Another popular open-source build is the buildlog.net unit.) They ended up with a huge 24″ by 48″ cutting bed and with a laser tube rated for 100 watts continuous output. It can cut 1/2″ plywood and 10mm acrylic with ease. The entire machine is built from 20mm Misumi aluminum t-slot extrusions, making more like a giant erector set then a commercial built machine. We hadn’t seen too many of the Lasersaur builds out in the wild, so we thought you might like to see one too. Now, before you start ordering parts to build your own, you should know that a top of the line build like this will run you about $7-10k. But by comparison if you were to go with something with the same cutting area and...

I grow my own vegetables, limit the amount of driving I do and regularly wash my

I grow my own vegetables, limit the amount of driving I do and regularly wash my clothes in the bath water – and yet I am shocked by how much plastic I can go through. This is about to change, writes Anita Horan. I’m one of those “Bloody Greenies”. I am also a mother, wife, writer and photographer. I donate my services to numerous charities and community groups. I have also started teaching photography workshops to teenagers and offer a free “Social Media, Self-esteem and Selfie” talk at the end of each workshop to help young people and their parents place value on having a dignified online presence. According to data released by the Australian Council of Social Service, my family lives just above the poverty line, so five years ago we moved to the rural edge of Sydney where we hoped to live a life of voluntary simplicity. We rent one of the cheapest houses available, grow our own vegetables and support the local roadside stalls and monthly market. I do much of the clothes washing in our bath water and rarely use the dryer. After much effort, our last electricity bill showed our four-person household only has a one-person footprint. I cook mos...

Create a magical land for your kids in the comfort of your own home – all you need is your imagination… and a few bits from wilko. It’s the school holidays, and so far you’ve been to the zoo, the park, the pool and the town centre… what about making a fairytale castle next on the list? NEWPORT TWP. — For the second time in as many years, state officials are making plans

NEWPORT TWP. — For the second time in as many years, state officials are making plans that could shut down the State Correctional Institute at Retreat. And for the second time in as many years, Northeastern Pennsylvania’s state legislative delegation is reacting to the news with a bipartisan show of solidarity against closure of the facility. “We have a tremendous fight on our hands,” state Sen. John Yudichak, D-Plymouth Township, said Wednesday. “We can’t allow this action, which will have a devastating effect on Luzerne County’s economy.” SCI-Retreat has 384 full-time employees and nearly 1,100 inmates, according to the state Department of Corrections website. Unlike 2017, when SCI-Retreat was among five state prisons Gov. Tom Wolf was eyeing for closure — only SCI-Pittsburgh was chosen — this time it appears Retreat is the only facility on the list. Also unlike 2017, Luzerne County is already facing a second major blow: Recently announced plans by the state to close the White Haven State Center, a 112-resident home for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. “If both White Haven Center and SCI-Retreat close, it will mean a loss of 840 total jobs and a direct...

A master of the trade walks you through your first weld

It’s daunting to watch a trained welder stitch two pieces of metal together—so much so that it might deter you from flipping on that entry-level welder you bought a few years back. Hell, you might not even be sure of how to set up your machine, let alone slap replacement rockers back onto your project car. Yet we’ve found that welding is one of the top skills DIYers say they want to learn … someday. That day is today! We sat down with one of Detroit’s top welders, Josh Welton, owner of Brown Dog Welding and a master of the art, to guide us through the process of striking our first arcs with a MIG (metal inert gas) welding setup. You won’t be a master after reading this, but it’ll make taking your first steps easier. Contaminants can lead to a bad weld, so it pays to make sure your torch — and all other equipment — is clean before you start. Let’s assume you’ve got your welder sourced and a project before you. Even brand-new machines from reputable companies like Miller and Lincoln can do with a good inspection and cleaning before striking the first arc. A perfectly clean welding machine and torch will help keep contaminants from affecting the weld. Basically, i...

The Dyke Division of the Two-Headed Calf: Room For Cream – New Events Hello Museum Through

The Dyke Division of the Two-Headed Calf: Room For Cream – New Events Hello Museum Through December 01, 2017 – New York The underground hit Room for Cream is back! Reuniting with new special guests, The Dyke Division of the Two-Headed Calf stages Season 4 of Room for Cream, a live performance serial that ran for three seasons from 2008 to 2010. This subversive soap opera situates itself in the fictional Sappho, MA, a lesbian enclave and life experiment that is paradoxically both separatist and inclusive by nature of its world-building aspirations. Sappho is home to a wild, sweet, and perverse collection of queers of diverse ages, gender expressions, and politics. Thinking through a communal modality—in practice and representation—The Dyke Division stages contemporary queer discourse in the vernacular of “soap,” simultaneously embracing and critiquing what constitutes popular culture in our current moment. The project aims to hold and represent the mess that ensues when a group of folks elect to consciously live against the monolith of patriarchy, sometimes in competing forms of vigilance. The first twenty-four episodes of Room for Cream were performed ove...

Cannabidiol (CBD) has catapulted itself into the consciousness of health and wellness-minded people around the world, and for good reason. In addition to CBD’s wide range of therapeutic uses — supported by an ever-expanding body of research — its safety, accessibility and legality have made it more popular and widely available than ever.  Amid all the excitement surrounding CBD, infused topicals have emerged as one of the fastest-growing consumer product categories. Marvel Comics’ December 2019 solicitations: 4 big takeaways

It’s that time of the month again when solicitations reveal tidbits about our favorite series and cover artists get to shine. Today, Marvel Comics has released their December 2019 solicitations. Below you’ll find info on each book to close out the year, and it’s a big one thanks to Marvel’s 80th anniversary. Some of these solicitations have already been released by Marvel, but here’s a breakdown of some of the bigger reveals. Here are my four big takeaways. The first of a few big surprises is the new 2099 books and the creators behind them. Chip Zdarsky will be writing a Doom 2099 book with Marco Castiello on art, Jody Houser is writing Venom 2099 with Francecso Mobili, and finally, Nick Spencer is taking over Spider-Man 2099 with Ose Carlos Silva. The 2099 future appears to be dying and these new books centered on 2099 will see that timeline potentially end. Other big news is in the realm of X-Men and if you’ve been reading House of X and Powers of X you probably already know that. The X-Men solicit reveals the X-Men are the most powerful heroes of the dominant species on the planet” and I wonder what the Avengers think about that. It also reveals a new villain emerges in the S...

Flight delayed by baby hedgehog on Stornoway Airport runway

A passenger flight was delayed when a baby hedgehog crossed the runway as the pilot was preparing for take-off. The Loganair flight was taxiing at Stornoway Airport, on Lewis, when the creature made a surprise appearance. The captain brought the Saab 340 aircraft to a halt at about 17:20 on Thursday and waited patiently for two minutes while the hoglet crossed. The 30 passengers were informed of the reason for the delay in their journey to Inverness in the Highlands. Neil Hughes, Loganair’s director of flight operations, said: “The captain safely avoided a prickly situation for the little hedgehog, following procedure until the animal was off the tarmac. Large Animal Sculpture Turtle “Our network extends into some of Scotland’s most remote communities so there are quite a few opportunities to see animals in the wild – and we’re always conscious to disturb them as little as possible.” Pilots operating from Stornoway regularly scan the runway for wildlife, given the rural location of the airport in the Outer Hebrides.
