LA’s North Korean Noodle Restaurant Ham Hung, 34 Years Later

“I remember when we used to do 1,000 noodles a day,” Samuel Oh says in longing disbelief. Ham Hung is slow, and it’s about 6:30 on a Wednesday night. Earlier, he was up on the roof trying to repair the vent hoods (Sam is the owner and handyman of the restaurant), but it started raining so the fix will have to wait. Los Angeles is cold and murky just days before Memorial Day weekend, and that’s not great news. Sam has a scorned looked on his face as he glances out the window. His seasonal depression seems to be a little more acute because Ham Hung specializes in naengmyeon, the refreshing North Korean cold noodle that made a stir at last year’s Korean Summit in Seoul, when North Korean president Kim Jong Un said he had brought some of the dish to share with South Korean president Moon Jae-In. Naengmyeon is a seasonal dish for the older generation, best when eaten in the thick of summer heat. Served with a cup of piping hot soup broth, there’s a constant warming and cooling of the body between the ice cold and steaming hot broths. Back home in Hamhung, North Korea (where the restaurant gets its namesake), a lot of cold noodle restaurants close in the winter. Not here in Los Angele...

Researchers say milder winters combined with an abundant food supply allow some colonies to survive later in the year and grow to the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. Charles Ray, an entomologist working with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, says the state may see large numbers of the giant nests this year. Two super nests have already been confirmed, a month sooner than when the first nest was spotted in 2006. During that year, the state had 90 of the nests, which can contain more than 15,000 of the stinging insects. Experts say removal of the colonies is a task that should be reserved for licensed commercial pest control operators. Kenai: A summer baseball squad is being threatened by financial troubles. Two complete PET lines were installed in the Al Kharj facility of this Saudi Arabian beverage

Two complete PET lines were installed in the Al Kharj facility of this Saudi Arabian beverage producer. Since high speed and reliability coupled with great product quality were among the top requirements from this customer, Sidel was deemed a most suitable machine supplier for the job. Since its founding in 1977, Almarai has grown via strategic investments, becoming the largest producer and distributor of food and drink in the Middle East with a market capitalization exceeding $12.5 billion. When Almarai recently reached out to Sidel, they needed to increase the production capacity around the single-serve format of orange juice (200-mL) bottled in PET and handled under cold chain distribution. As the leading position in the juice market, Almarai decided to install two new Sidel PET complete lines, each one handling 54,000 bottles/hr, in the Al Kharj central processing plant (CPP). As the largest food manufacturer and distributor in the Middle East, Almarai strives to operate to the highest standards of international best practice, starting from the processing step: the two new PET complete lines installed at the Al Kharj production site – the first ones Almarai awarded to Si...

Home Maintenance – 15 Ways to Minimize Effort on the Exterior

Metal roofing is a great investment. These systems can last 40 to 60 years, which is two or three times longer than asphalt shingle roofs. Metal roofs protect against fire and harsh weather, and they reflect sunlight to reduce cooling costs in the summer and insulate in the winter. And you don’t have to be limited to traditional metal hues, because metal roofing comes in a wide range of styles and colors. This slideshow is sponsored by LeafGuard Brand Gutters. Its facts and opinions are those of BobVila.com. Wood decking can splinter, warp, and rot, so consider composite decking, a low-maintenance alternative with a long lifespan. You will never have to stain, paint, or sand a composite deck, leaving you more time to enjoy your outdoor space. An added benefit—composite decking is made from waste sawdust and used plastic, so it’s also good for the environment. If you are tired of cleaning leaves out of your home’s gutters, installing an Englert LeafGuard Brand gutter system can solve the problem for good. The design allows rainwater to travel around a curved hood and into the gutter while leaving behind leaves and other debris. Even though the opening appears small, these o...

Below is our annual tribute to Climbers We Lost, here honoring those who left us in

Below is our annual tribute to Climbers We Lost, here honoring those who left us in 2018. The climbers range in age from 20 to 96. Some people broke our hearts by leaving much too soon. Some lived long and at least died naturally. Climbers We Lost has in the six years since inception become an affirmation of how meaningful our endeavor is and how important our identities as climbers are to us. This year one young contributor, Danika Hill, in contacting us about her friend Haley Royko, 25, wrote, “Climbing was her life’s joy, and she told me in 2015 that when she passed, she wanted to be included in your annual tribute. It is actually the only dying wish she made of me, and I want to make sure it happens.” Each year we are concerned to think that we will inadvertently leave out some people. But when temperature and humidity hit, long sweaty hair becomes a damp and scratchy accessory. And

But when temperature and humidity hit, long sweaty hair becomes a damp and scratchy accessory. And threats of divorce. But old-fashioned barber shops are hard to find in big towns – and my head had become accustomed to the beatings of Johan, Eloise, Sammy, Melissa and lately, Koos – all wielders of old-fashioned hedge clippers. And all prolific creative yappers. However, fate stepped in and I found just the place in some West Rand mall: “Mediterranean Barber – Cheap & Chop-chop.” Entering the tiny abode I was greeted by a male sporting a thin black moustache and sailor’s cap. “Hi. Sit. How?” The accent could’ve been anything from Greek, Arabic, Portuguese, Sicilian, to French, but his monosyllabic utterances made it impossible to detect. As I flopped into an ancient chair that had evidently succumbed to the rigours of a torture chamber, the barber vacuum-packed me with sheets of white linen and throttled me with a thick plastic necklace – to keep fine hairs out, or further symbols of torture? Mafia leanings? I gave up, closing my eyes while he did his thing. Must’ve been the snip-snip and raspy Godfather-like breathing that lulled me into a deep sleep. Startled, I awoke wit...

When you’re traveling, the last thing you want is more weight to lug around. That’s why

When you’re traveling, the last thing you want is more weight to lug around. That’s why having the best lightweight luggage will make your trip easier and more carefree. But what should you look for? Well, aside from weight, which is obvious, you want to first look at durability. It’s often a challenge for manufacturers to make suitcases that are both lightweight and well-made, so look carefully at the materials and construction. Typically, materials that begin with “poly” will be pretty sturdy (for example, polypropylene, polyurethane, and polycarbonate). Also, look for handles and other components that are made from strong aluminum material. After that, think about the wheels. There’s nothing more annoying than trying to roll through the airport in a hurry when your wheels refuse to turn. Consider opting for a suitcase with spinner wheels, which rotate a full 360 degrees. Though, if you don’t want to sacrifice packable space for wheels, then look for a suitcase with roller-style wheels that reviewers say operate smoothly and don’t catch. Lastly, consider bonus features like pockets, zippers, mesh sleeves, and elastic straps. If y...

It Was Just a Kayaking Trip. Until It Upended Our Lives.

A weeklong trip in Alaska was supposed to be an adventure. In an instant, it became the experience that defined us all. A weeklong trip in Alaska was supposed to be an adventure. In an instant, it became the experience that defined us all. The whale sighting happened right away, minutes into Day 1. Jon, Dave and I had just been dropped off on a remote Alaskan shoreline, an hour and a half by boat from the closest speck of a town. Jon was working as a sea-kayaking guide that summer in Glacier Bay National Park, and he had invited us up for a seven-day excursion during his week off. As the boat that delivered us vanished, the drone of its engine dampening into a murmur and then finally trailing off, it became unthinkably quiet on the beach, and the largeness and strangeness of our surroundings were suddenly apparent. It was a familiar phenomenon for Jon from the start of all his trips: a moment that people instinctually paused to soak in. To me, it felt like those scenes of astronauts who, having finally rattled free of the earth’s atmosphere, slip into the stillness of space. Except we weren’t in space. We were on earth — finally, really on earth. We were only starting to move a...
